A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use: The Smart Grid involves the use of communications and computing technology to transmit and distribute energy more efficiently. This video describes the smart grid and how it will reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency and the integration of renewable sources of energy. Featuring interviews recorded at the IEEE Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: Accelerating Innovation Conference (2007) and the IEEE Energy 2030 Conference (2008). Produced by IEEE and sciencentral, Inc., with funding from IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEEE-USA, and the IEEE New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC). 8 minutes running time. Because an installed solar panel, which provides intermittent power, might not actually reduce the necessary baseline generation capacity at all. The power fluctuations also make the grid unstable, and prone to blackouts. You need to smooth out the generation noise by making energy usage variable. That means making charging an electric car, or using an ac unit, more expensive for the brief lulls, and cheaper for the brief peaks.

Sounds crazy but why not invest all that allocated money for renewable energy for installing individual solar panels. Two-way communication my ass.

  • checksandbalences says:

Well, its being implemented here in cali full speed. A month ago they cut off power to our neighboorhood to install the box or device on the poles. Now today there installing the “smart meters”. My assumption of this is ultimatly its not going to benifit the customer but rather just make it easier to “be more in touch” with the customer if you know what i mean. This is yet another invasion of what privacy we have left. Im pretty sure in the coming years they will be pushing for “smart “appliance

After reading the comments below, I wonder if we should waist the money and the vast resources we are all pitting into this great endeavor. I would love to go back twenty five years ago when we were laying out the framework for the Internet to see what all of these idiots would have said.

Brilliant…let the gov control & monitor how much energy the deadbeats and leeches use. Afterall, OUR utility bills subsidize them!

  • IronJackalTw says:

    crazyassrider491,

How about a Bear or a Lion to help you figure it out!?

Better yet, a 1,000 Degree C hot iron rod up your arse would do wonder!! >=P

World leaders are stressing on the importance of renewable energy in various sectors…With the rise in greenhouse gas emissions, the renewable energy sector like wind power is gaining popularity. Smart Grid technology will help wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower gain momentum…Companies like Pacific Crest Transformers provide energy-efficient transformers and work in the direction of Smart Grid technology. GREAT idea…My utility bills are high enough paying for them

  • heoquayhp says:

they can afford this if they withdraw the troops

  • RonaldKovacs says:

Actually, I am already doing this at my cottage. It is not that difficult. Costyl though.

  • RonaldKovacs says:

I’m with you! Smart grid means government will be able to control when and how much power you can use.

  • geniusahmed3 says:

am simply going to install giant battery
hmm as if the batteries are easy and cheap and
    last long
do you know the major prb od electric vehicles is
    the batteries
my project is on smart grid it will be the future of electricity :D

  • shwacksack says:

K to be honest I was just talking out of my ass when I said that because I dont even have enough money to buy a pack of duracells but it’s still complete crap.

  • shwacksack says:

This is complete crap. I am simply going to install giant battery reserves and charge them during the off hours so I can use them during peak hours. Fuck this stupid shit it’s just more control.

  • CircusMaximus09 says:

Let’s start by limiting the energy use of those that we already subsidize-the deadbeats! A chunk of my bill goes to pay theirs

  • jckometer says:

Today is tomorrow. Do we want to point our children in the right direction? This is the future, if we want any…

  • blitheringFool says:

Since when were the degregulated PRIVATE utility companies part of the government? Since they are not, this cannot be considered socialism. There is the possibility of control via a private organization, but Americans are already used to that. It’s called the Federal Reserve.
In order to facilitate change in one facet of life, other facets must also change. In my opinion, this is for the better, because this jam we are in can most likely be blamed on unchecked capitalist expansion.

  • dcon49 says:

    lol. wow, calm down sir.

  • stonerj0e says:

just using growing as an example. i do not grow marijuana . but this would make it much easier to track marijuana growers and then have them put in prison to get stabbed and raped just for having some plants . i call bullshit .

  • stonerj0e says:

what ? do you think i need to go to jail and get stabbed for growing my own shit ?

  • dcon49 says:

    and your a stoner!

  • jedirei says:

don’t mind him. some people are just the way they are.

  • ballzy says:

I hope that’s a joke. It’s you’re, as in ‘you-are’. Careful before calling people stupid.

  • dcon49 says:

Of course, verbal attacks are a sure way to look like the intelligent one. Why didn’t I think of that?

  • Smashburn06 says:

    your fucking stupid….
